Celebrating ten years on the road; No.1 Station are having a musical party. This party started with the band having the honour of being invited to support Roxy Music on their latest UK tour, playing all the major venues in the UK, and culminating at the London 02 Arena.
No.1 Station have been popular favourites on the London and UK underground scene over the last decade, they have been a massive hit on the festival circuit playing all the major festivals over the years, even having been invited to play at Glastonbury festival for eight consecutive years by being perennial favourites on the main stages in the Lost Vagueness, Club Da Da, and Avalon fields – one year they managed to play an amazing fifteen gigs on various fringe stages over four gloriously muddy days.
An eight piece band consisting of a driving rhythm section, blistering horns, and melodic blues vocals, No.1 Station get the crowds on their feet, rocking to the beat wherever they perform. Formed from the conception of Marcus Downbeat – a long-time Lee Perry collaborator and member of the Upsetters – No.1 Station are the vanguards of a brand new generation of Blue Beat music; music derived from the classic dance beats of traditional Jamaican Ska, Rocksteady and early Reggae; beats that were known simply as Blue Beat amongst the Rudies, Mods and other followers of the sixties UK dance scene.
In 2004 Marcus established the new sound of Blue Beat when he resurrected the original Blue Beat label. No.1 Station released six 7” 45s on the original Blue Beat label. Only so far available on vinyl (see discography,) these classic tracks will be released on an album later this year as part of the band’s tenth year celebration.
Their last album – Boss Beat – is regarded as a contemporary classic and has received enormous critical acclaim and extensive radio play. The band have played 3 live sessions for BBC Radio 2 and Mark Lamarr, who described them as “The UK’s Premiere Ska band”.
In 2010, No.1 Station scored an unlikely goal when they teamed up with Disturb Media to release a novelty song and video for the World Cup. Optimistically entitled ‘We Are The Rulers’, the song became remarkably popular, and managed to become voted winner of BFSB and BBC radio Five Live World Cup Song competitions – an international vote – the song sank with the hopes of the nation when England failed in the tournament.
2011 is the year to celebrate all those wonderful things. Let the party continue! No.1 Station would love you all to join the party with them and to join your party too, to celebrate ten years of No.1 Station. To celebrate music. To celebrate life….the party must continue!
